Kindergarten Unit 1 Launching the Reading Workshop Start and end dates: August 22-October 21
Unit Overview: Students will learn rituals and routine, they will begin to make text to self connections, will begin to understand concepts of print, and begin to understand comprehension stratgies (answer questions). Students will see themselves as respectable members of a community of readers.

What makes a good reader?
Why do they read?
Students will Know/Uderstand that:
Books have a front and back, reading involves moving from page to page, reading should be paced, pictures tell a story, students will notice print and that it moves from left to right, and students will be able to listen to and answer simple comprehension questions.
Standards Address: Standards 1-6
Pre-Assessment:
Read aloud "If You Take a Mouse to School". Pull kids one on one to answer a basic comprehension question: Cand you name some of the things the mouse wanted? A prompt (can you name anything else?) is okay to use.
Informal Assessment:
Whole group questioning. Turn and talk. Small group instruction.
Post Assessment:
Read aloud "If You Give a Moose a Muffin." Pull kids one on one to answer a basic comprehension question: Can you name some of the things that the mouse wanted? A prompt (canyou name anything else?) is okay to use.
Real World Application:
During time spent in the classroom libraray/school or home, student will show knowledge of concepts of print and will handle books appropriately.
Reading: Consistent questioning after read aloud

Writing: Responding to literature (listening for comprehension).
Content: Building comprehension across the curriculum.
